Two of my favorite bloggers are heading out to Salt Lake City, Utah for the Alt Design Summit. These ladies need no introduction as they are heavy hitters in Blogville, but I want to give them a shout out anyway. I have followed Jess and Chelsey's blogs from pretty early on and it's amazing how much their blogs and work have evolved. They are both super crafty, talented photographers and their sharp-witted, down to earth posts make you feel like you've been good friends for years (well, I have known Jess since middle school....). What's even more rad is they worked their butts off to attend the summit. They blogged, tweeted, and promoted the heck out of their sponsor spots and design work, which you can see here, and here. I really don't think there is anything these ladies can't do. I don't know how they do it all, especially with being parents- they are an inspiration to say the least! Anyhoo, I CAN'T WAIT to follow along through their posts and pictures, I will totally be living vicariously through them!

I've been needing a little downward facing dog in my life for awhile now. I don't know why it's been so hard to go sign up for a yoga class but I've been talking about it and putting it off for almost a year now. I guess out of sheer laziness or reluctance to add yet another activity to my already jam-packed schedule. Or maybe I was feel self-conscious about looking like a clumsy freak in class. Luckily, there is a little studio across the street from our place, so last night after I parked the car, (in under 20 mins. no less!) I stopped in to see what their schedule looked like. It must have been fate because it was the first night of a 4 week beginner class! As I walked back across the street to change, I was grinning like an idiot. Seriously. I'm SO EXCITED to be getting back into some kind of workout routine! The class was amazing and I'm so looking forward to next week. I'm also looking forward to a new, hopefully- rejuvenated, peaceful me.. at least that's how I imagine I'll be after all the yoga and eating well. Guess I'll be trading my typical late-night Thursdays at work for Saturdays, I think it will be worth it!

Vegging Out

Usually I'm not much for new year resolutions, probably because I lack all resolve and willpower when it comes to changing habits. I am the queen of justification. BUT I've been really sick about how I've been taking care of myself, or not taking care of myself as the case may be. I've been eating poorly and have stopped worked out. Dusty feels the same way, in fact we're both pretty disgusted with ourselves. SO, we've decided to make a change. As of January 1st we've started a cleanse of sorts. We are trying to eat clean. No more meat and less processed foods. Smaller portions. Not sitting on the couch all night and all weekend. Gristle is really appreciating the longer walks and trips to the dog park. Also, no alcohol. (Record scratch) Well, no alcohol during the week. It's only been eight days but I swear I feel a difference. I don't know if we'll stay veggie or not but we're going to stick with it for at least a month. Dusty was vegetarian when we met so I think it will be more difficult for me.

In order to keep us inspired with our new veggie menu I've been looking online and in cookbooks for some interesting dishes. Here are two I tried this weekend- I don't really measure so everything is add to taste/preference for the most part! Both were inspired by recipes found on foodnetwork.com.

Bean and Walnut Veggie Burgers
You'll Need:
1 can of kidney beans, drained and rinsed
1 small onion, finely diced
a few peeled baby carrots, finely diced
1/2 cup of bread crumbs
1 egg
1 cup of chopped walnuts
a few mushrooms, sliced
worcestershire sauce
salt and pepper
english muffins
brie
fresh spinach
olive oil

Mash the kidney beans in a bowl. Add the egg, onion, carrots, bread crumbs as needed, walnuts, worcestershire, and salt and pepper. Use hands to form patties. Gently roll patties in remaining bread crumbs.
Heat oil in pan. Cook patties adding a slice of brie on each at the end, set aside when finished. Cook mushrooms in oil and worcestershire. Toast english muffins. Garnish with fresh spinach and top with mushrooms. I used a teensy bit of low fat mayo on the muffins so they wouldn't be so dry.

Huevos Rancheros
corn tortilla (I used lavash bread because we were out of tortillas)
1 egg
green pepper, finely chopped
1 small onion, finely chopped
fresh salsa (made in advance)
black beans
1 clove of garlic, mashed
fresh cilantro
goat cheese
hot sauce
cumin
salt and pepper

Cook pepper and onion with garlic. Add salsa and salt and pepper. Cook until thickens. Set aside. Cook black beans, add cumin and hot sauce. When warm, set aside. Fry egg over easy or sunny side up. Serve egg over warm tortilla with beans and salsa. Garnish with fresh cilantro, goat cheese and hot sauce.

New Year, New Digs

So it's not perfect yet, or even fully unpacked but here is a peek at our new place in the city. When I walk down the steps of our old brownstone, onto our little tree lined street, I channel a little Carrie Bradshaw action, (minus the Manolos and plus the husband and dog).....

Never thought we'd be doing the center city thing but we are honestly, LOVING it! It's super tiny but now that most of the boxes are out, it is the perfect size for the three of us. I don't know what will happen when we eventually become four, (no news, believe me)- I guess we'll have to move yet again. But for now, we're soaking it in. I think the biggest perk is all the freaking restaurants surrounding us! It's breaking the budget but we can't help ourselves..haha. Last weekend we found a prohibition themed joint with a three piece band playing gypsy jazz and swing- YES please. Parking is a nightmare, we're talking between 40 minutes to 2 hours of looping around, ugh. Other than that- it's pretty darn cool.

When the lovely folks at Shabby Apple asked if I would be interested in doing a review of one of their dresses I immediately went to their website and started to drool over their vintage-inspired dresses! Of course with my obsession with the color green, Mariposa Grove was an easy choice. Not long after, the dress arrived in the mail. It was adorable, and seemed to be well made. The fabric was a little more lightweight than I had imagined, and probably would be best for the spring and summer months- but with the warm winter we've been having I was actually perfectly comfortable with tights and a light sweater. I can't get over how many different styles they offer! They offer women's, girl's and materinty clothing, and have been featured in USA Today, NY Times, Lucky mag and O mag to name a few.

A Very Special Order

Several months ago I was contacted by a lovely lady who was interested in having custom barely clutches made for her daughters for Christmas. These wouldn't be just any clutches though, they would be made using the fabric from her wedding dress for her girls to carry when they eventually marry! (No pressure right? Believe me, I nearly had a stroke when I made that first cut!) I was so touched by the idea I had to say yes. So I got to work on some sketches. We decided to go with five different designs. Then she tells me she's talked with one of the women who was a bridesmaid and she still had her dress! It made a perfect lining and really complimented the bags. What a wonderful thing to have on your wedding day- a sweet little clutch with such a sentimental story! I had such a wonderful working on this that I just had to share this- plus she even sent me a picture of her and her bridesmaids on her wedding day!

A Little Anniversary Bling

Dusty and I celebrated two years of marital bliss on Monday. After work we went out for a fabulous dinner where we split a bunch of small plates. The food is SO good there it's almost a crime to limit yourself to an entree! It was a gorgeous evening and we sat at a high top where the restaurant opens to the sidewalk. And even though we agreed to no gifts, Dusty didn't listen.... I work with my hands so I rarely wear my engagement ring and my wedding band kind of fits around it, so it looks weird when I wear it alone. I've never been too crazy about it either (don't worry he didn't pick it out- I did, haha). SO Dusty worked with our friend Ricky, who designed three bands for me to choose from. Ricky is a fabulous jeweler in Philly and made these by hand- what the what?! I choose the middle band but he's going to add a slight "scoop" like the wider band. I can't wait to see it!

Sassy Sausage Lasagna

Why have I never thought of adding sausage to my lasagna?? Thank you Food Network.com! I was inspired by their lasagna and blended their recipe with my own- it's a MUST try and it's SOO freaking easy! Fall is my FAVORITE time of year and I especially love all the cooking that comes with it. I'm so excited for baking, comforting stews and homemade everything!! This lasagna really hits the spot and tastes even better after a couple of days, once the flavors have really sat together for awhile :)

What You'll Need:
No boil lasagna (tried for the first time and loved it!)
Italian-style turkey sausage, casings removed
Onion
Sliced Mushrooms
Spinach (I used frozen)
Fresh basil
Ricotta (I use almost 32 oz.)
Shredded cheese- have fun with the varieties! (when I'm super ambitious, I grate my own)
Can of tomatoes
Seasoning... salt, pepper, garlic
2 eggs

Brown the sausage and drain, add chopped onion, mushrooms and spinach- set aside

Add spices to ricotta- red pepper, garlic, sage, salt and pepper, thyme, basil

Add 2 eggs and beat well

Spread a layer of sauce evenly on bottom of baking dish

Add a layer of pasta

Spread about 1/3 of ricotta mixture on pasta with fresh basil

Add a layer of diced tomatoes, about 1/2 the can

Add a layer of the sausage mixture.. how pretty!

Add a layer of cheese

Repeat steps as many times as will fit in the dish or until you run out of ingredients :)

Save a little cheese and sauce for top layer!

Bake at 350º for about 45 mins covered then remove foil and cook for 5 or 10 minutes, or until cheese is browned slightly

The quality of this photo is horrible but it looks and tastes amazing in real life!

I finally ate at my first Steven Starr restaurant this weekend! I met a friend Sunday evening at Parc in Rittenhouse Square. It's a lovely little french place that serves homemade bread! We ate outside and shared and onion and goat cheese tart, spinach ravioli, cheese plate and escargot! I've been craving snail since my trip to New Orleans a few years ago. These were absolutely delicious.. although they weren't as good as Arnauds- shhhh! Plus, we each took a loaf of the cranberry walnut bread home.. YUM!

Fall Sewing List

Can you believe it- my fall sewing list actually includes some things for myself??! It's difficult sometimes when you sew all day for your 9-5 then you come home to squeeze in a few hours sewing for your own business. It's hard to feel inspired and motivated to sew at all. SO- even though I have plenty of custom orders and tons of new stuff to make before the holidays.. I decided to make Sundays my sew for me day! It's the perfect thing to get me excited about sewing.. which always leads to increased productivity and creativity for my Barely Measured projects. It's so nice to have a project to work on without a deadline! Here are a couple of things I've been working on...

Remember this quilt? Well, I finally finished the top and picked out a backing! I ADORE this print from Cloud 9 fabrics. I literally almost peed my pants when I saw Spool's blog post about their new line, Across the Pond! Plus, I bet it washes up o nice and soft since it's 100% organic! I think the colors are great together and I love how the pattern on the backing sort of mimicks the blocks on the front! Now all I have to do is wait for my walking foot to arrive in the mail and I'll be all set to quilt this baby up.. I wonder what I'll use for the binding? :)

While I'm waiting for my walking foot to arrive, I went ahead and started another quilt- eek! I know, blue and greens again- I swear, next time I'll do something with oranges and yellows! Not sure exactly what I want to do with this quilt, but I've started piecing 2.5" strips in sets of 6.. we'll see what happens. Maybe I'll feel brave and do little 2" x 2" squares?!

What? New Patterns!
Last weekend when Dusty and I were in Jim Thorpe we discovered a cute little shop with vintage clothes aaaaannd PATTERNS! I couldn't believe they were only $3 a piece! I can't wait to try one of these!

Hello Fall, You Handsome Devil

Okay, so maybe it's not officially fall for a couple of weeks, but as soon as I turn my calendar over to September- that's enough for me! Although I must say, today was extremely hot and humid! Ugh, better not try to sport knee high boots again for awhile...

Of course, you know I love food- so I thought I'd share one of my favorite end-of-summer, begining-of-fall dishes. We actually made this over the campfire this past weekend and it's SOOO easy and very delicious!

What you'll need:
1 Butternut squash
2-3 tablespoons of butter (or less if you're counting)
Brown sugar and cinnamon to taste
Aluminum foil
Oven at 350º or campfire

What you do:

1. Cut squash in half.

2. Remove seeds and pulp

3. Piece meat with fork or knife in serval spots to let the goodness seep in :)

4. Add slices of butter to each half

5. Sprinkle on brown sugar and cinnamon

6. Wrap halves separately in aluminum foil and place right side up in heat source. (I tried to sandwich mine together and wrap as one and lost a lot of butter and sweet stuff :(

Have a yummy brew to enjoy while making!

Unplugged

Dusty, Gristle and I headed to the Poconos this weekend for a bit of camping. In true form, we didn't arrive at the campground until well after dark, only to set up our brand new, never-before-set-up-tent- up, make a fire and cook some dinner. Luckily our new tent is super bad ass and was a breeze to assemble. After I summoned up all my girl scout training from 1995- I had a fire going in no time. We both agreed on the way up that there would be no email, blogging or business of any kind- even though the lure of the iPhone was there. Instead we limited ourselves to fb check-ins and photo updates. We had a grand time and hope to return when my Dad and brothers come to visit in two weeks!

Also, campgrounds are weird places. This campground was no exception. The sites were super small and you felt like you were practically having dinner with the neighbors.. which usually isn't a good thing. I think someone should make a mock-umentary on campgrounds.. or maybe something like the moving Waiting? Either way, they really bring some pretty fantastic characters... I especially loved the karaokee on Saturday night where children were singing Sir Mix-A-Lot's I like Big Butts... how cute

Hello August | DIY Terrariums!

What you'll need:

glass container
soil
river rocks
plants/living moss
water bottle or mister

1. Add a good layer of rocks so that your plants can drain

2. Add some soil

(the amount will depend on the size of the container and your plants- I put about 2 inches in)

3. Play with different arrangements of the plants and moss until you are satisfied, then plant them in the soil. You may need to add additional soil to make sure their roots are covered. I added moss around the plants. Feel free to sprinkle a few rocks on top for effect.. and maybe a cute silver bird too?

I have enough to make three terrariums!

I used the leftover moss to fill in around my other houseplants which will help keep the soil moist.. and it looks pretty too!

This weekend I celebrated my birthday by treating myself to a snazzy new tattoo at NY Adorned. The lovely and very talented Virginia Elwood sketched up a beautiful design inspired by a fabric from one of my favorite designers. I have to say it hurt like a m$%&*Kf@##r but it was worth it, I love it! I've been waiting for months and was really excited when her next appointment just happened to be this weekend. Dusty and I boarded Gristle for the weekend and had a wonderful time in NYC visiting our good friend Cats. We ate and drank too much and the weekend was topped off by a nice relaxing Sunday in Philly. We picked Gris up from the kennel and shopped and lunched at Terrain (my new, most favorite place on Earth.. no really- I want to live there). They are owned by URBN and is a nursery, home dec/garden store and cafe that serves DELICIOUS locally grown food. We can't wait to go back one night for dinner!

Excuses, Excuses...

These are the reason I've been away for awhile! Just finished a huge custom wedding order- 8 verona clutches in an Erin McMorris fabric chosen by the bride. With my new job, teaching at night and Spool on Sunday I've literally spent all free time I can find holed up in my sewing room working on these. Aren't they so bright and cute though? They be perfect for their destination wedding in the Caribbean!

Inspiration Challenge

From the minute I laid my eyes on Spool's latest shipment of shot cottons, I thought of at least a dozen projects I wanted to use it for- a shot cotton quilt top, a shirt, a dress... A few days after the shipment came in I received a package in the mail, the necklace I ordered from Mama Mandolin's shop. I literally squealed in the street! I absolutely ADORE this necklace- espcially the fabric and "bow tie" element... a lovely, modern touch to those classic necklaces we used to make in girl scouts. And then I had a thought-- what if my next sewing project was based around this necklace? What if I found a shot cotton that went well with it?!!!!! It was like, two worlds colliding... The very next day I purchased a yard and a half of one of my favorite shot cottons and made the Anna Tunic Cami.. I simply love the little green buttons and it goes perfectly with my new necklace!! Maybe you'll be inspired to do a similar project? Believe me it's super fun, especially if you in a little creative rut.. it really gets those wheels a turnin'

Who In The World Is Ashley Kayhart?

I'm so excited to finally get a post up about my girl, Ashley who is also an instructor at Spool. Ashley recently launched her specialty quilting and pattern shop on Etsy- so check it out! She has a unique sense of color and patterns and her original quilt patterns are especially rad! Her quirky sense of humor will have you following her blog in no time, along with her crafty projects and delightful photography. We both share a special love for Anna Maria Horner, and if you ever meet Ashley- she'll tell you that Anna once commented on one of her blog posts (trollip!). Anyway, I asked Ashley a few questions about K<3 and this is what she said..enjoy!

I promise I don't just like her because she's ginger-headed!

1. When did you start sewing?

You know, I did some sewing in highschool. I made a little bunny rabbit with movable arms and legs for home ec, that got me started. I was kinda punk rock, so I would repurpose my old clothes and make handbags out of them. I remember I had a fuzzy leopard print skirt that got a massive orange juice stain, don't ask me how I remember that part, and I cut it up and made a cute little short strap purse. I carried it everywhere... I wish I still had it.

I would do a bit of sewing here and there after that, with my repurposed singer I got for my 18th birthday, but then it kind of teetered out and I stopped. I started again a year and a half ago. I was, for lack of better words, just plain bored. I saw that there was a cute shop near my work that had quilting classes. I took one, and then I was hooked! After that first crib blanket I jumped in head first and made a full sized bed quilt! Crazy.

2. Tell us a little bit about K<3?

Well, it's my name really, Ashley Kayhart. For a long time I thought my last name was kind of odd, but then, I started to think about it, and I realized, heck, how many people can write their last name in symbols? Not many! So it's become my brand.

Kayhart, particularly as a blog, started as a simple quilting blog, for the love of color and the craft. I had always thought that quilting was something amish people did, or old ladies in Wisconsin, but I was finding so many cute patterns and colorful palettes that I realized, quilting is cool man, do it!

I think my quilts and pattern work are for those who are a little cute, a little rock n roll, and a lot of awesome! I've had a couple strange looks pass me when I am working on a new palette, but in the end I think they come out vibrant, born bright!

3. You recently started selling some of your quilt patterns. What's next for K<3?

Well I do have my etsy shop open, which for now is at www.etsy.com/shop/ashkyt. I have three patterns for sale, a quilt, a table runner/quilt, and a super fun and easy baby bib pattern! I also have quilts for sale, a few in my first signature style, the robin, as well as baby bibs and washcloth sets for boys and girls!

I am so excited about the whole process. Every quilt I make has a style it's own, and I can't wait for a happy baby to have it, love it, and keep it!

4. Philly summers can be brutal! What is your favorite summer drink?
Oh, iced tea. Definitely. I grew up drinking it hot all winter, and cold all summer. There are usually two pitchers full in the fridge at all times!

Beach Day- Photo Update

After a REALLY awful week, we decided to head to the shore for the day yesterday to relax and have some fun. It was an absolutely PERFECT beach day... I wasn't too hot and there was an incredible breeze! I almost didn't want to leave to come back. I wish we were able to to take a vacation this summer but at least we're only a little over an hour away- perfect for a day trip.

First prototype for a cute little clothespin bag! I think it's a great way to use laminated fabric, don't you? I have a few custom orders I need to finish but I can't wait to make a bunch more. I think the next ones might even have a buttoned flap (to fold over a regular size hanger).. exciting! I can't wait to put a few up in my shop!

Fourth of July

Whoever said it'd be a good idea to travel south fourth of July weekend was not taking into account the millions that also head that way for the beach! Ugh, it took us nearly 4.5 hours to get home.. crazy! We had such gorgeous weather and it was such a great time that it was totally worth it :) First we headed to Dorchester county to eat some crabs with my family and to celebrate my aunt's birthday. Then we headed up to Chestertown and stayed with Dusty's parents. The next day, our friends Olga and Ricky drove down for some crabbing and fishing. We had a wonderful day on the boat, even if we didn't catch any crabs. Roy cooked up some perch fillets and Molly made some crab cakes. YUMMMM! We almost didn't want to come home!

A Dress for Lucy

As you know, I've already declared this the year of the baby. Practically all of our friends have had babies this year. Lucy is the daughter of one of Dusty's best childhood friends. In fact, they still talk on the phone once a week. Anyhoo, Lucy is just one of the babies on my "Need to Sew a Cute Summer Dress For" list. I've made a bunch of Oliver and S baby dresses for samples in the shop so I used the Oliver and S Swingset Pattern-- although I lengthen the tunic to make a dress.

I was SO excited to use some of the new Erin McMorris fabric we got in the shop from her Summersault collection!

Home Sewn

I've been really inspired lately by all the gorgeous fabrics and patterns we've been getting in the shop recently. Of course I want to make one of everything! I often find though that when I makes clothes they always have that, home sewn look and I don't actually end up wearing them. I did actually wear my latest two pieces though- of course I didn't take photos or anything.. They're pretty simple pieces- perhaps that's the key to either avoiding or embracing that home sewn look? I actually made these awhile ago but haven't gotten around to photographing them, mainly because I haven't had anyone to take the pictures- but then this morning I was like, WHY DON'T I PUT THEM ON MY MINI DRESS FORM? Brilliant! Why haven't I thought of that before? Of course it's not even remotely the size or shape of a real human but it does the trick! What do you think? Pretty cute, right?

I used Pat Bravo's Boho Dress pattern- but because the instructions are part of a DVD that I didn't have- I kinda made up how it was sewn together... haha. Guess it helps that I made a sample for Spool a few months ago.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE shot cotton (the type of fabric I used)- it's super soft and subtly changes color depending on the light and angle. I also love the cotton embellishment I added around the neckline!

Flattering above-the-bust seam and pleat adds a little definition to this loose-fitting dress. I also love this dress paired with a thick woven belt and cute summer wedges.

Amy Butler's Barcelona A-line Skirt pattern. Definitely does not fit my dress form.. haha! I've been eyeing up this fabric for months!

Sweet little zipper was easy as pie, thanks to the hidden zipper trick I learned from my girls, Laura and Olga :)

I can hardly believe that we're almost midway through June already! Where is the time going? I feel like it better slow down or before I know it, fall will be here. Perhaps part of the reason is that I've been SO busy! I thought things would slow up after Art Star but then I realized there's just so much that I want to do! We also saw the McQueen exhibit at the Met. It was totally worth the two hour wait to get in. I think they did a fantastic job curating the exhibit. It was chilling and breathtaking.. I only wish it was quite so jam-packed with people!

Yes, I am referring to this decadent sandwich pictured above. This sandwich is so damn good you'll wonder if it really counts as lunch, instead of dessert!

holy deliciousness batman!

what you'll need:

1 ripe banana

2 slices of bread of your choosing (I like mulitgrain)

chunky peanut butter, sorry smooth doesn't cut it

honey

cinnamon

butter

1. spread butter on one side of each slice of bread

2. spread peanut butter on the other side of each slice

3. slice banana and place slices on each piece of bread (on the pb side)

4. drizzle with a touch of honey

5. sprinkle a dash of cinnamon on each

6. place one half on med. hot griddle/pan (butter side down)

7. place other half on top, carefully (butter side up)

8. flip once and serve

9. enjoy :)

I finally finished Amy Butler's lotus dress pattern! It is definitely the most complicated dress I've tried so far. I had to play with the fitting a bit but overall I'm happy with it. I decided to do it without cap sleeves which are just not flattering on me. I even skipped using bias tape and simply topstitched around the arm opening. I didn't realize how easily the fabric wrinkles- I swear I ironed it before snapping these pics!

Next on my agenda is to make this adorable tulip skirt from Stitch Mag (Winter 2008) out of a gorgeous Echino print. Usually I'm not in love with skirts that button down the front- it always reminds me of my 1st grade teacher, Mrs. Lockhart- but this looks so sweet that I'm giving it a go anyway! Stay tuned for pics!

Weekend Shoot, New Bags and Pancakes

This has been the first weekend in quite a long while where I have been able to just relax. I had no where that I had to be, no expectations.. nothing. Plus the weather has been absolutely gorgeous. I know that I've been pretty lax about posting.. and I suppose that's why I've lost a few followers but you know what? I can live with that. I'm just so grateful for this weekend! I've been working round the clock for almost two months and I'm ready for a break! That being said, I did do a little bit of work this weekend but I had a great time. Walked to the park at the end of my block and took some pics and I posted some new things on Etsy. Dusty even made me banana pancakes this morning :)

Yes, this is truly a photo dump post! I had a lovely and busy weekend in Maryland. This weekend marked five years since I graduated from Washington College. I got to see a bunch of my classmates and enjoyed seeing the students I hired as freshman, excitedly chat about graduation. It was also a weekend to see family-- Dusty's brother Chris flew in from Texas and his cousins from Seattle and Georgia. We had a picnic out at Granny's on Saturday. It's been years since I've seen everyone and it was nice to relax and catch up. My bestest even came up with her beautiful little girl, Leighton. Sunday we all headed to Chadds Ford, PA to celebrate the life of Dusty's uncle who passed away in March. It was a really great weekend- I hope you like the pics!

8th Annual Art Star Craft Bazaar

Well I survived my first craft show! Even though the weather almost gave me a stroke on Saturday, (our leaky tent didn't help the matter) I had a blast. There were some kick ass vendors there and it took major restraint not to go crazy and buy a ton of stuff. I was also really surprised at how many of my friends and family came out to show some support, especially everyone who drove up from MD! It really felt good to know I have so many people believing in me. Who knows, maybe I'll try this again sometime...

A few of my MD friends who stopped by on Saturday- notice most of the stuff is put away on the tables to avoid the leaks? lol

I have a whole new respect for people who do this full time- setting up a booth is no joke!

Guest Post: DIY Fabric Roll

Hey there! It's Melissa from Running with Scissors. I'm UBER excited to be the guest blogger for May!
I've been busy making tons of baby quilts for friends and noticed that my scrap pile is getting larger and larger... what to do with all those random pieces of fabric?

How about a roll?

You'll need:
2 pieces of scrap fabric, cut to the same size (these are 6" squares)
scrap ribbon
small pair of scissors
fray check (for the ribbon ends)
a sewing machine (I love my Bernina 1130!!!)
items to roll: crayons, markers, colored pencils, make up brushes, sewing supplies, etc!

Step 1: Facing right sides together, sew around your square.

I used a quarter inch foot.

Make sure not to sew the entire square closed! Leave about a 2" opening at the end.

Step 2: Turn your square so right sides are facing out. Then, sew 1/4" around the entire border of your square, making sure to turn under the opening and catch it with your stitches!

Step 3: Take whatever it is you are rolling and place it 1/3 up from the bottom. Fold the bottom of your fabric over your item and pin in place. This is also a good time to decide where to place your ribbon (I sewed mine into the left side seam in the next step). Sew down the right side and the left side, leaving 1 large pocket.

Step 4: Here's where you personalize! I made 4 pockets in mine; sewed right along side a crayon for the first 2 pockets, then split the difference and sewed down the middle of the remaining pocket.

See the crayons inside?

Tie off with your attached ribbon!

Don't forget to Fray check the ends of your ribbon.

*~Voila!~*

Please feel free to use interfacing or batting for more stability and protection, I just wanted to use up scraps.

{Flashback Friday} Mother's Day

Mother's Day has always been a little weird for me. My birth mother hasn't been in my life since I was 17 months old so I was raised by my father. My grandma was a huge part of my life- the greatest woman I've ever known. So I guess I always feel a little sad, missing my gma and all. But I also feel proud of my father, who at 24 raised two babies, virtually on his own. He is also currently raising my brother, Sean (technically my half brother) who is 15 years younger- by himself. I guess I've never given Mother's Day a whole lot of thought, but now with facebook and blogs- I feel like everyone is posting pics of themselves with their mothers. Although I will say, that now that I have a mother-in-law, I have, for the first time in my life- looked at the Mother's Day section of Hallmark :)

Of course I don't want to let my mother-less situation- preclude me from doing a Mother's Day post, haha..

No, not my countdown! One of my best friends is due in 10 days! She has to be one of the cutest, fit mama's I've ever seen. How is it fair that a nine month, pregnant woman is still in better shape than me??! This crazy girl is still doing Zumba! Anyhoo, her and her husband had a few pics taken by a photographer friend of theirs and I think they are stunning! She posted a few on her blog and I was literally weeping, as I sat alone in my apt. looking at them.. haha. She just looks so beautiful- and they look so happy and in love :)

I've recently been looking for some classy artwork for my walls. Found a couple interesting pieces in a window of a gallery on Main Street- one is an ink drawing on train ticket stubs that I think is awesome. The other appears to be oil on canvas board. It's a weird little gallery though.. you can't actually go inside. So I called the number off of a poster and left a message. I also discovered this rad website of posters- and while I'm not sure posters really fall in the "classy artwork" category, these artful lovelies certainly count in my book!

Good Eats & A Quilt

Bon Appetite:

I've been trying to stick to a more wholesome, healthy diet. I've been incorporating local, seasonal veggies and haven't had red meat in 3 months. Don't even go there about the wine- I'm going with the research that says it's beneficial.. :) I've also been eating smaller portions and I've lessened the amount of deserts I make. Although I did make some rockin' strawberry and goat cheese pastries the other night.. shhh. So between my diet and my morning run along the tow path, I'm hoping to be looking and feeling better soon! Maybe I won't be totally mortified to buy a bathing suit this year... and speaking of suits, I just adore this one.

Disappearing 9 Patch:

Inspired by the 9 patch that Laura and Olga made for Spool, (pictured here)- I just had to make one for myself! But since I should only be sewing for Art Star, I felt guilty for starting a project for myself. So of course, I managed to find a way to do it without the guilt! I usually take the train into work and I get to the shop about 40 mins early. The perfect amount of time to get a few blocks finished for the quilt.. haha.

Of course I needed to add one of my all time favorite prints by Denise Schmidt!

{Semi-Wordless Wednesday} Tattoo

I cannot wait to get my next tattoo! I have a consult on June 11th with Virginia Elwood at NY Adorned! I haven't been to NYC in months and I'm so excited to visit and see my friends. I've been thinking about this tattoo for almost two years. Orginally I was thinking about a tree, then about a year ago I saw this print from Anna Maria Horner and knew it'd be perfect. Then I had to find the right artist. My good friend and former roommate Caiti has worked at Adorned for 3 years and has had loads of work done so I knew she'd have some suggestions. She pointed me towards Virginia's blog and I was instantly excited! Now, I just hope I don't chicken out.. I'm not so good with pain!

This was my first Easter away from family. It was weird but we had a nice, relaxing day. Lucky for us the Easter bunny sent us a little money and we decided to treat ourselves to brunch. We walked along the tow path to Main St. It was such a gorgeous day and everyone was out and about. We had a lovely time at Le Bus and we stopped at Doggie Style and got Gristle some fancy treats. It was a nice way to spend the early afternoon and I was in a perfect mood to get some sewing done! Hope everyone had a lovely weekend!

Hi! Biscuit here from Velveteen! I am so stoked that I had something to offer for Heather's DIY guest posting series. When she first announced it I racked my brains trying to think of something to send, then I stumbled on an old project of mine that I thought would be perfect. Simple, cheap, natural, and very satisfying if you have some rage issues, 'cuz it involves hammers. Hi-YOOOOOO! I've known Heather for a long time, in THE REAL LIFE and stuff, so this is a special honor for me. Heather is actually one of the people who inspired me to start my own Etsy business and release my crazy on the world. She is an absolute ball of sunshine, and a constant source of inspiration. I recently acquired my own URL and refocused my site on the creative side of my life as opposed to the personal. I really want to dig in and push myself to find inspiration in daily life and use it in the pretty little things I create for my shop. Well, enough about me, let's get on with the project!

I have had these cheapy, plain curtains from IKEA since the dawn of time, which have been haphazardly pinned to several walls and window frames, never getting the love they deserve. I figured what better time to shower them with said love than now, and make them into something beautiful and functional. Sounds simple, right? Well, it would be were it not for the ridiculously expansive canvas I chose to start with. This is a project best done outside on the sidewalk (sorry neighbors below) on a sunny day when you can really beat the crap out of these leaves. Sitting on your apartment floor with a little ball-hammer, hunched over, and 6 months pregnant is not the time to "print" on over 4 yards of fabric. God help me, I will finish though. Alright, on to it.

Lay out your ridiculous canvas....I mean, lay out the napkin you would like to imprint. Seriously, start with napkins and tea towels, this is tedious if you want good results. Get a good idea of how many leaves it will take as you can only use each one once (if you beat them proper that is) and go collect. Keep in mind, the more supple the leaf, the more color. Crisp leaves break apart and generally don't give that much color. Go for different shapes, sizes, patterns, etc. Also, if you do go the ridiculous route, don't gather all your leaves at once as they will dry out and be of no use by the time you get around to using them.

If you want a more uniform look, setup a general layout like above. This will help you decide on your spacing, and how busy you want your print to be. Lay the leaves face up, you get more color this way although you think the opposite would be true. Just trust me on this one.

Now. You beat those leaves, you beat them good. NO MERCY! Actually, start off easy, see how the leaves handle the beating. They will start to look a little like mesh when you get the color out, this is a good thing, you're beating 'em proper now kid!

REJOICE! The first leaf is done! If you are able to do this outside and really go after it, this will probably not be as arduous a task as it was for me. I am looking forward to doing this project again in the fall and maybe getting some poinsettias or mums to beat in for a splash of color. Nature better run and hide, mama's got a hammer and a lot of free time.

**I originally wrote this post out when I was pregnant and trying to think of simple, clean decorating ideas for my future kid's room. Sidenote: they NEVER ended up in his room, but rather as a nice pantry cover/room divider curtain.**

Just for your information, I hated that song. My brother would tirelessly sing it over and over and over again. It was horrific.

Anyhoo, I've been especially slack this week with posting but I picked up some extra hours at Spool and I have been busy beyond belief. I managed to work in a few hours in the evenings- working on things for my booth at Art Star. I can't tell you how stressed I've been, worrying that I'll barely (heh heh) have anything to sell. But all I can do is make what I can. So, I'm really excited to share some of what I've been doing!

When I went to the Crafty Bastards Craft Bazaar in D.C. a lot of vendors had freebie buttons.

she does a great job and they're fast and affordable!

Went crazy at Paper Source and found these sweet little kite stickers to add some flava to my signage.

In the spirit of wedding season- I've made a few dupioni bride and party clutches. So exciting to finally use some of the vintage brooches I've been hoarding.

I also love when it's full of people enjoying the warmth and sunshine.

I walk through Rittenhouse on my way to work.

On days when I take the train I have about an hour to kill so this is usually where I sit and read.

I love the old city architecture.

Tonight we decided to go out and be all romantic- living beyond our means and celebrating the warm, spring weather. Dusty is enjoying his second week working as a furniture maker for BDDW and I had a lovely day as well. We're loving Philly and so far, all signs point to "Yes- you are going to have a wonderful life here." Oh wow, thank goodness! haha. Here are some pics from the evening.

Repurposed Shelves- DIY Inspiration

Just wanted to share this little project Dusty and I did this week. About a year ago Dusty found the great little antique ladder at a job site. We kept in in his shop in MD waiting to discover a way to put it to use. We brought them up to Philly and made these charming little shelves. They're not very deep but they're great for small books, photographs and plants, plus they help make our sun room a little more cozy. I'm not huge into antiques but I love mixing a little old with new :) What do you think? Any other similar projects that you've done?

The red walls really help to warm up this otherwise unheated room. I hate the carpet but can't imagine how cold the floor would be in the winter without it!

{Semi-Wordless Wednesday} Healthy Bites

Dusty and I have decided that we need to start eating healthy and living a more active lifestyle. We both have a little extra junk in the trunk that we wouldn't mind unloading... So that means no more chicken wings, and that take out pizza with extra breadsticks nonsense. I'm optimistic that we will stick to this for awhile, too. To help us I'm going to be cooking a lot of seasonal veggies and using fresh herbs to zing up the flavor.

Located just 15 mins way... and it's right beside Trader Joes which is awesome.

I'm cutting out red meat so it's mostly chicken and fish for me now.

The inspiration for my post's title.. I usually order from Healthy Bites when I'm working at Spool. Their tuna salad is chock-full of cranberries, the multi-grain bread is my go-to and the lavender soda is delicious!

Organic vanilla yogurt, sliced pear, granola with pecans and a dash of cinnamon!

I even splurged on flowers. Ranunculus and tulips are some of my favorites.

Here are some pictures from our weekend in Virginia Beach. Had a good time but wished we could've stayed longer....

It was absolutely freezing so we didn't hang out here very long.

{nursery projects}

Project #1: Make new cushion covers for the glider.. not so easy to do when you can't use the existing covers to make your pattern.

Tessa picked out a gorgeous upholstery fabric. Was a little tricky to work with because it was reversible and therefore super thick!

Project number 2: Curtains. We made two sets- one in this preppy print and another set in extra fabric from the cushions. Tessa is pictured above as she trims the selvages. See more pics on her blog here.

After a long day of sewing we treated ourselves to Skinny Dip.. which turns out to not be so skinny after all...

A Weekend at the Beach

Fresh Picked Felt Veggies

One of my very dear friends is due in May. Her nursery theme is beach/garden. Well of course I offered my skills to help her set up the nursery and to get ready for the baby. One of the things she asked for was a vegetable mobile so today I made some felt veggies! I think they look super adorable and if I had more time {and money} I could go crazy making all different kinds of veggies.. haha. We're headed down there this weekend and I'm bringing my sewing machine. T has whipped up quite a to-do list for me including curtains and chair covers. Should be a nice crafty weekend since it will be too cold and rainy to relax on the beach :( Will be sure to post lots of pictures next week!

Saying Goodbye

Today I said goodbye to an old friend. Well, an old friend who was a grandfather figure for most of my life. Yesterday, at work I ran out for a bite to eat before my evening class. I checked my voicemail only to recieve the heartbreaking news that Jack Willey had passed away. I knew he had been sick but death always comes as a shock to me. I felt shaken but somehow managed to make it through the class. When I got home I called my Dad for the funeral details and started looking through old photos.

My grandmother and Jack began dating in 1982, two years before I was born- so as early as I can remember there was Grandma and Jack. Those of you who know me know that I don't have a big family, so those that are sucked in become a big part of our lives. I don't have a single childhood memory without Jack. As a teenager I even lived with Grandma and Jack in Cambridge, MD for a brief period of time. When I was 16, my grandmother decided to move out of Jack's place and built herself a small little house in the country. I'm not sure exactly what transpired between the two of them but I kept in touch with Jack. He even helped me buy my first car and went with me to test drive it. Jack was great with cars, rebuilding classic mustangs on the weekends. Everyone in my family consulted with Jack before buying any used car.

I also remember calling him up on one trip home asking if I could stop over and get his approval on this guy I was seeing. He laughed and told me to bring him by. I'm glad Dusty was able to meet him. We spent the afternoon on the porch, talking and watching cars drive by. Something Jack did often in the spring and summer months.

Today was difficult. I've been thinking about Jack a lot recently and have wanted to send him a few of these pictures... I just never got around to it. Regret is a bad feeling to have once you lose someone. I wish I kept in better touch with him and visited with him more. I was able to spend some time with him a couple of months ago when I was home visiting. But he had just had a series of strokes so the visit was kind of sad. He smiled a lot though. Jack was a very sweet man and he was wonderful to me and my family. I feel fortunate to have had him in my life. I will miss Jack a lot.

Rest in peace Jack. I hope you and Grandma are sharing a beer up there.

A Fresh New Look

Things are a changing over here at Barely Measured. New hand stamped packaging, bright tissue paper and clever wrappings will leave you feeling like you just received a very special gift, well- a gift you paid for anyhow... I've been brimming with ideas on how to decorate my 10x10 booth at Art Star and ventured into Paper Source on Friday to get some inspiration for signage. I was definitely inspired, so inspired in fact, I decided my packaging and tags needed an overhaul. I'm really pleased with how everything turned out even though I think I got ink everywhere!

I used to sew little "envelopes" for each set of care cards. Was really cute but took a LOT of time!

I also made cute accordion -style care cards and would sometimes stitch paper or cloth to the ends..yeah.

My new envelopes are made from recycled paper and are hand stamped. The care cards are double printed on colorful card stock. Care instructions on one side and my pinky swear on the other :)

fyi- it takes about 3 hours to hand stamp a bird and "care" "cards" on 200 envelopes

Great News!

It's funny how a little bit of good news can change your entire outlook on life, isn't it? I've been pretty blue lately and I've chalked it up to the cold, gloomy winter months. I've also been working part time at Spool, getting settled into our new home, looking and interviewing for full time positions, and freelancing- all the while trying to make time for sewing custom orders and new spring bags.. crazy right? Well today I got a nice little tidbit- Barely Measured will have a table at the Art Star Craft Bazaar in May! I applied but pretty much resigned myself to not getting in... SOOOO excited to be a part of the festivities! Dusty even suggested I stop looking for full time work for the time being and put all of my efforts into this show and I think I'm going to take him up on it! More details to come!

Before and After: DIY Shower Curtain

It's been awhile since I've posted a DIY project or before and afters and I think this is just the project to share. In our new place, the shower has an L shaped shower rod and let me tell you, it's NOT easy to find a shower curtain to fit this. I went around to half a dozen stores and decided I'd have to try online. I found a few- some were hideous, others were super expensive- and there's no way I'm spending over $100 for a shower curtain. So, I decided to make one myself! This is a easy project and would be great for a beginner. As long as you can sew semi-straight lines and do basic math you're good to go :)

While I love my Dwell shower curtain from Target.. I didn't like how it only partially covered the shower.. the standard size for a shower curtain is 72" x72"- I wanted one that was longer and wider so I went with 86" x 80".

Picking your fabric:

I used a light, quilt weight cotton fabric that measures 44" off the bolt. Most fabrics come in this width, unless you are using an upholstery fabric or other, fancier fabric which come in all different widths, starting at 55" and up. Either way, you are most likely going to have a seam down the front of your curtain.

I simply adore the main print from Heather Bailey's Nicey Jane collection. I love the colors and it's vintage feel. I had a blast finding the perfect coordinating prints :)

You'll Need:

1/4 yard for top strips

4 yards for middle strips

1/2 yard for bottom strips

1 pack of grommets plus grommet pliers or old school setting tools

thread

Here is what I did for mine. After I pieced everything together I finished all the edges by folding the raw edge over 1/4" over and pressing, folding that edge over 1/4" again, pressing and top stitching along all edges. Remember to press all seams open to give a nice, professional look.

NOTE: Along the top edge (where the grommets go) I folded the raw edge over 1.5" to make it twice as thick- giving a little more substance for the grommets to go through!

The most important thing is to place the grommets exactly so they match up with the lining- this spacing is standard for all shower curtains and linings.

Remember you can alter this pattern easily for a standard 72" x72" shower curtain. You can even do vertical stripes, which would mask the vertical seam!

I've also been whipping up little zipper goodie bags, they're just so damn useful and adorable. More sewing today.. I'm even making a few Juliette's to put up in the store but will still offer it as a custom bag too. Stay tuned, will be adding new bags weekly throughout March!

Catching Some Rays

Went for a little hike in search of some vitamin d yesterday. Luckily we live super close to Fairmount Park- over 4,100 acres of trails, woods, water and public art. It was almost 70 degrees and sunny- absolute perfection :) I decided earlier this year that I loathe the cold months of winter and after months of being couped up- void of sunshine and proper physical activity it was SOOO nice to be outside. Especially since I spent the rest of the weekend organizing my workspace and sewing like mad! Here are some pics from the weekend:

Guest Post: Magnetic Paper Dolls

Hello, Barely Measured readers! This is Alli from One Pearl Button. Heather sweetly asked me to guest blog for her today - she thought you all would love this quick and fun tutorial for making magnetic paper dolls. I originally published it last winter, when I made these for my nieces. They still love the dolls and play with them all the time - definitely a success! I hope you enjoy the tutorial; be sure to stop by One Pearl Button sometime and say 'hello!'

What you’ll need: Pages of Betsey McCall paper dolls printed from here (I used a cotton paper that is slightly heavier than normal printer paper, but anything will do); adhesive magnet sheet(s) (I used one 1’x2’ sheet (purchased at Michael's), and was able to make over 50 pieces for my set); a small pair of crafting scissors; a small metal box (these dolls fit perfectly inside the boxes sold at Michael's that are intended to hold gift cards).

Step 1: Cut a rectangle around your doll (or outfit, or accessory, or whatever), cutting as close to the edge of the doll as possible without cutting into it (remember that you don’t need the tabs, so feel free to cut those off).

Step 2: Cut a rectangle of magnet the same size as the rectangle you’ve just cut around your doll (a simple way to measure – hold your doll rectangle up against the magnet sheet and cut around it).

Step 3: Peel the backing off of the adhesive magnet sheet and carefully press the doll onto the magnet. Work from one edge to avoid wrinkles.

Step 4: Cutting both the magnet and the paper together, trim the excess from around your doll. I found that these look best if you leave a small cushion of white around each piece (don’t worry about the lines from the tabs showing, they really aren’t noticeable).

Step 5: Repeat! Follow these four steps for all of the pieces you’d like to include in your dress-up doll set.

Step 6: Place your dolls and their possessions into a metal tin. For extra cuteness points, make a sweet label for the front:

If you like my label, you can find it here! Download the file at full size through the “All Sizes” tab. To fit the tins sold at Michaels, print the label at 2.75 x 4.25” onto adhesive-backed paper. Cut out and stick the label to the front of the tin. Adorable!

A few weeks ago I dusted off my machine and have been busy ever since, working on custom orders, redeeming gift certificates and getting my spring barely bags in order. My Etsy shop is in desperate need of some fresh new pieces and I'm thinking lots of clutches, ruffles, pleats and fun, bright prints! The collection will go up March 1st so stay tuned!!!

In other news, my family came up this weekend to visit. It was supposed to be my dad and my youngest brother, Sean but Bryan came up as well. He took off of work to surprise me :) Dusty and I took them for cheesesteaks and gave them a tour of the city...
